Domain Name Primer

Some less than honorable registrars will charge you for assigning name servers, or changing your domain info, changing ownership, transferring, etc.

Some will charge you very little to purchase the domain initially, and then large amounts for renewals or transfers.

Some make you fax them a change notice for any changes, and then they queue you up in their manual system until someone at the company can make the changes for you.

It's also not always the most expensive registrar who has the best service or features. This is a case where paying more does not always get you more - but you also need to be sure that you're not buying low to get in, and then pay through the nose later.

Transferring domains

Many domain registrars now offer a very easy way to transfer domains. All you usually have to do is to go to their transfer page and enter the domain you want to transfer. It's very important that the admin email address under your domain info is working, as you have to confirm your domain transfer.

You usually get a mail where you have to click on a URL and confirm that you want to transfer your domain. The transfer time varies but it usually takes about a week to everything get back to normal.

Also a very important thing to mention, your DNS information will not need to be changed again once you've transferred your domain. All the info will stay intact and you'll not notice any downtime if you do everything right.

Also one more thing to mention is that you can transfer your domain at any time, as you'll add a period of one year to the existing expiration date of your domain, no matter how early you transfer a domain name.
