Well here goes. Say i wanted to create a database of all the shops in my local area, and then users would come along and search for a specific type of shop and my site would display the returns. Step by step, how would i go about that.

It really depends. If you are good at marketing then you could hire programmers for your programming jobs and concentrate on marketing alone and improve and expand your business.

yeah, i have more of a business background, and decided to move into the internet. Is this a tricky proccess, making up these databases or what? Just curious!! Do I have to maintain them, by manually putting all new businesses into the database myself, i take it?

If you really have no programming experience you're probably best off hiring someone unless you want to spend a year or more learning the ropes.

Yeah, probs without the map. I know, it does not sound like a decent business idea, but where I live not a lot of businesses are on the google maps, so it is not as if Im trying to compete with google. I suppose you could say I have found a niche almost.

OK, I understand. This is a good idea. Well, you need to make friends with some geek that will help you build what you want. Forums are a good thing, but there's just too much to say about this, and nobody will want to type it. Speaking is better

I can just say a bit of software that you'll need. If I mention some names here, use Google to find them.
    1. You need a database server. MySQL is good for that.
    2. You need a good interface for the database. Try SQLYog. You can enter data into the database through it.
    3. You need scripts to retrieve data and form webpages from it. PHP is a good scripting language capable of doing just that.
    4. You need a hosting company that has MySQL and PHP
    5. Upload all your stuff to the host.

Hope you'll find your way through it.

have you ever thought about starting a free blog about local shops?
It is so easy to set up a site even a child could do it and I'm sure many do.
    Just an idea

Thanks guys, might implement the free blogs thing at some stage. I have just agreed terms with my "geek", so it is really up to him now.
