    Google & Site-Wide Link Exchanges.

My site Craziness.com was second for a popular keyword, behind only one site owned by another member of this board. Last week I participated in a side wide link exchange. Now google has updated my and the persons cache, I've dropped completly out of the SERPs for that keyword.

This seems to be proof (or at least strong evidence) that google does not like site wide link exchange, and therefore penalises them using an algorithm.

Remove it and see if you bounce back, otherwise it could just be coincidence... how is the other person's rank?

Just to say - the person I exchanged links with is not the person who is on this board and is number 1 for that term.

There site is similar (games) but cheats. I've removed the link, and they have too.

The only other change to my site in that time was I changed the meta description of the homepage.

The person I link exchanged with does loads of site wide link exchanges, so wouldn't be effected by one.

Yea, but how can you be sure it wasn't just Google messing around? I've held the #1 spot consistently for months - however, the other day, I dropped to page 3 or 4. The next day I was back at #1.

Could have been, but I'm not going to take risks. My site is too important, so I'm not going to let it's white hat get muddy again...

It seems real quick for it to regain it's rankings though. Even if that was the case, I'd think that it would take a few weeks or even a month or so before your back to where you were.
Don't you just love free internet games ?

it doesn't make any sense for google to drop you for a sitewide link exchange. would google want to drop GM.com because all of it's pages link to Chevrolet.com and vice versa?

Google probably just devalues sitewide links so that the cumulative benefit of sitewide links is little more than having one incoming link.

Is is possible that the sudden drop in rankings and the regaining of your website's position be related to the site-wide link exchange.

This might happen especially when you are not having very powerful one way links, because it might indicate a sudden, semi artificial link building program.

If you are exchanging links with a link farm site then there are chances for getting dropped better try to get links from reliable and trusted sources.
