Not very long, but it'll take 12 weeks or longer for the toolbar to report it.

I submitted my site to dmoz and have a few posts on about 6 or 7 forums related to my topic.

That's not very much... Getting the DMOZ listing would be important, and a significant link.

If the pagerank of the pages that link to you is low (i.e. individual forum threads, low pagerank) it'll take longer for you to get ranked/crawled/indexed.

Generally, the higher the pagerank of the pages that link to you, the faster you get crawled/indexed and crawled more regularly. (of course adding new content and what not is important too)

I recommend combining your forum into ONE or TWO sub-forums to start. Right now you have 13 sub-forums. It'll be easier for you to appear active only having a couple categories to start, then splitting up once you're growing.

I say this, because individual tennis blogs and fan sites could be a great place to ask for links. You could email the webmasters of these fan sites and blogs, inviting them to get involved at your forum. Tell them they can respectively advertise their fan sites in their forum signature. However, why would they want to join your forum when it looks very inactive due to it being new.

    Takes a lot of work.

But ranking on Google also depends of how old is domain.
So in competitive niche being just indexed doesn't mean that much. It takes much longer to climb on some descent position on search engines.
    Am I right?

Yes, google favors older domains, just means you have to work twice as hard to get there

If that's true, shall I buy an expired domain for my site to have a good start? What if the content will be different?

Sorry to be picky... but they DEFINITELY dont just favor older domains.
But, there is probably some emphasis on the age of a DEVELOPED website.

I don't think buying a domain from BuyDomains.com which lets say was registered in 1998 will be helpful, versus buying a new fresh domain for a new project.

Sorry yeah, it favours in the means of the history/backlinks from the site. Not the actual date of the domain name.

I don't see how buying an expired domain is going to help muggle.

    - you will get page rank after google updated their page rank for all web pages that they have indexed.
    - you will a pagerank from 0 to 10 and this depend to your linking strategy.
    get more and more links,
    question:
    submission to DMOZ:
I think that submission to dmoz take time for 2 or 3 years (because submlission is one thing but the most important to get listed in this directory).

Usually it take 3 to 4 months to update PR (the green on toolbar).. The last updates occur last April 28 to 30, 2007. But todays update is very slowly... Almost everybody are waiting for it and expected it to on 3rd week of August but nothing happened...

Just wait and see Google's update...
