Someone told me: "With 4000+ backlinks you can rank for ANY keyword using a Blog..."

I saw many Blogs by myself as well with few thousand back links rank 1st page for "highly competitive" keywords (often using re-directs!) like: buy viagra, ringtones, casino online, etc.

The fact that it is a blog is irrelevant. You have to consider the quality as well as the quantity of links. It is not true that if two sites have identical backlinks but one is a blog and the other isn't, that the blog will do better.
