Adding/changing content will drop my rankings within search engines (MSN Search)?

Adding/changing content (banners, text, etc.) will drop my site's rankings within search engines (for example - MSN Search) after crawler visits my site again?

I have few sites ranked top-5 in MSN. And I need to make few changes like adding banner on top of the page & changing few text parts, but I am afraid that this will cause my sites to drop in rankings. I don't want to take this risk...

    What is your experience here?

    Thanks a lot!

    Yes and no.

Adding any content to your site could increase or decrease your rankings depending on how the search engine likes the new content.

Adding a banner ad shouldn't have any affect though since search engines ignore that type of code.

You shouldn't ever be afraid to experiment and add new things, worst case scenario you remove it next month and try something else.

    Thanks a lot Chris!

You mentioned: "Adding a banner ad shouldn't have any affect though since search engines ignore that type of code."

    - But I am adding an URL to my content?
    - What about the ALT tag part of the banner?
    - Search engines ignore this?

    Also wondering the following:

A.) I am using 'affiliate advertising' links on my site, what is better for SEO: To change affiliate url into something like http://www.mysite.com/affiliateurl.php (this will re-direct to my affiliate offer!) or just use affiliate url on my site (for example: http://www.cj.com/id.123456) which will not cause difficulties for SEO reasons?

B.) For example - my site is about smileys & would like to add 'ringtone' banner on top of my pages, if I use for ALT tag (= ringtone banner) smiley related keywords & use for re-direct url to 'ringtone' offer (ringtone banner) something like this http://www.mysite.com/smileys.php , this is considered as 'black hat' SEO?

I mean that I suppose to use for ALT tag for ringtone banner description about banner like 'Get here free ringtones...' & ringtone re-direct url should be something like http://www.mysite.com/ringtone.php and not about smileys!
