    .xxx TLD proposed

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20060316...netpornography

Personally I'm in favor of a .xxx domain... but trying to remove all porn from other TLDs would be futile.

    Really?

I doubt it'll ever get through. Bush's rampage on the porn industry is still going strong, and I doubt he'll see the xxx domain as anything other than a new evil ploy by porn webmasters to get even more porn on the net.

I like it because I think it'd legitimize porn. When you have an official XXX domain there isn't really much excuse for censoring the Internet anymore, it'll be easy to block if a parent wants to. Not that I run any porn sites, but I know the censorship slope is a slippery one.

Would open a can of worms though. Porn sites would avoid it for those reasons. Then you would have to force them to move. Which could legitimize moving other types of sites. Commercial only to .com, Network only to .net etc. Imagine if NBC was forced to move to nbc.tv

    Why would they do that?

I used to run a whole bunch of porn sites and the biggest problem was getting timewasters arriving there.

I don't want kids or someone who isn't interested to be looking at the site because it just munches up bandwidth -> increases my overhead.

Using a .xxx extension would have removed some of that waste.

    Yeah kids are timewasters.

I don't want people just looking at the free images, I want real 'grown ups' who have a credit card so I can sign them up to a 12 month contract (or whatever) - kids *are* a waste of money.

Everyone with "kid" traffic, send it to me, I'll make money off of it and cut you a check for a percentage of it.

This would probably be the most useful TLD category I could think of. IMO it should have come before .info.

sorry, I read this thread too fast I've just heard a lot of people trashing places like myspace saying "kids" don't buy anything thus you can't make money off them.

It's an interesting idea - but how will it work globally? It's all very well saying .xxx sites can only contain porn - but the idea of what porn actually is is something which is contentious depending on country.

The "Sun" website, in the UK for example would undoubtably be considered porn in many countries - even though it is (worryingly) the most read newspaper in the UK (a shoddy rag not worthy of toilet paper for those outside).

When a single country or organisation starts deciding what is and is not morally acceptable, things could well begin to go a little awry in net land

Don't get me wrong - as a parent I am not a fan of how easily accessible some stuff is - I'm just not sure the utopian ideal of .xxx tld is going to help much - and potentially could open whole other cans of worms...
