I have been using topsites since the launch of my site, and they've done ok. In the next week I'm taking most of them off though, as really I am referring people to competitors.

It's up to you, give it a try and see what the outcome is. One topsite has referred 2000 uniques to me throughout the last couple of months.

For smaller sites I like them -- especially if you host the list. By owning the list you can put ads on it which kinda makes up for the sending traffic away bit.

Their a list of related topic sites all linking through to a page that tracks theirs and any other site's listed clicks in and out. The more clicks you send the higher your site is listed within the page and (in theory) the more traffic you get back.

    here's an example of one:

    topfunsites.com/topsites/

Although they can bring in a lot of traffic for the owners and sites participating the quality of the traffics debatable as its usually happy clickers / exit traffic.

I ussually sign up, and put them in a back corner of my site, and click them everyday....

Most are garbage, but some are jewels...

EXAMPLE: I know this font topsites list that sends me over 25 hits a day, and I only send them about 2...
