Cheatcc.com sues game site for copying cheat codes

I was just waiting for this to happen..

"His lawsuit accuses Crave Online Media of lifting his cheats verbatim and posting them on the company's Web site, www.craveonline.com. Attached to the lawsuit are numerous examples of directions -- or cheats -- that were allegedly copied from Cheat Code Central and posted on Crave Online."

Ever wonder why nearly every cheat code on other game sites, such as GameFAQs, say "Contributed By"?

Well cheat codes, being factual information, aren't covered by copyright law.

Walk throughs & strategies though, those definitely are.

From reading that he's accusing him of "stealing" the cheats that he found out. He defiantly hasn't a case then?

Interesting. Many 'cheats' are just guides of where to go in a level and use unique wording; some are up to a few paragraphs in length. Therefore, I think that they might have a pretty good case against Crave.

But a lot are just things like:

    To unlock secret room
    L1, R1, Circle etc

Loads of sites have the codes listed exactly like that. Could lawsuits be brough up against these?

No, L1R1 Circle is a fact and if anything is the original creation of the programmer.

The issue is like what james said. "Cheats" that aren't really cheat codes, but walk throughs and strategy tips.

I'm not a lawyer, but here is my interpertation, which is basically Chris's

    Ok to "copy":
    god
    allammo
    allweapons
    fly
    warp

    Not Ok "to copy":
To use the following cheat codes press ~ to open the console

    god - invincibility
allammo - unlimited ammunation for all weapons
allweapons - get all 16 weapons
    fly - become airborne
warp # - enter # to warp to level

FAQs, don't even think of posting them without explicit written permission (e-mail should be fine) from the original owner.

If it's two players, at least on Contra. I never entered da Select for that game.

And Wikipedia also doesn't show the Select...
