off topic: phpBB does NOT suck. What is showing is mySQL problems, it doesn't mean phpBB is the cause. With faulty mySQL/rogue scripts any thing could go wrong(including vBulletin)
Xander is right, phpBB is a good piece of software and the new version will be awesome. Does anyone know when that is coming out? Sorry for going far off topic
