Is a Yahoo listing worth the money?

Just wondering what people think about having a Yahoo directory listing? Basically, is it worth the money?

    For an ecommerce site, usually.

For a content site, usually not.

An affiliate site is somewhere in the middle.

Lets say you're selling cars, you make $1000 on each car sale. If Yahoo refers just one sale to you you've made back your investment.

Say you sell greeting cards, you make a profit of 25 cents for each greeting card sold, yahoo would have to refer 1200 sales to make it worth it.

If your a content site its very hard to justify the yearly fee because advertising rates are so low that you won't really make it back.

Well, it's an affiliate site. Average of $15 per sale generated. So it would need about 20 generated sales to break even. I expect the conversion rate to be pretty good. So, over the course of a year, maybe it's worth it. Hmm.

What about as far as link popularity is concerned? Would being in the Yahoo dir be any real good for that?

How did you get into Yahoo for free? (I thought you had to pay to be considered, and that payment wasn't even a guarantee of being listed.)

You can submit for free to noncommercial categories -- getting listed is a crap shoot though -- especially if your site looks commercial.

I work for a company that had two sites up and running before I came in. One site had been included in the yahoo directory and dmoz directory. Get Debt Free

The second site was not included in either. Debt Free
The thing that I've noticed is that with the one in the yahoo directory, it has very low rank in the serps in yahoo and msn. I do however get approx. 30 times the amount of traffic from google than yahoo and msn combined.

The one that isn't included in either directory gets a little more traffic from yahoo than google. However The placement in yahoo is much better by not wasting the money to get into there directory, I've been trying to get the other site unlisted for about 3 months so far.

I personally think that the amount of traffic that I lose from the free search isn't worth being in the Yahoo directory at all. I wouldn't even submit another site if it was free. but hey, that's just my personal opinion.

For an affiliate website, I would not really recommend, unless you make over $400 from that site every month already.
