A bit harsh don't you think? I hate spammers and everything, but nine years? Three or four, but NINE?

Geez I would expect the penalty to be death
Death penalty is funadamentally wrong.
So is spamming.
But do you agree with nine years?

i agree that nine years is a little too harsh. Maybe a fine, but nine years?
Yep, if you compare it to something like rape it's ridiculous really.

They should be punished, but 9 years does seem a little over the top.
I am curious to know what happened to the money that these people made. Was it totally confiscated or do they get to keep it/some? The reason for my question is that there are a lot of crooks (I get hundreds of emails from them every day) out there that if they knew that they could make millions, hide it, do some time (let's say two to three years) and come out to a hefty bank account, they wouldn't hesitate. But knowing that they may serve nine years may make them think twice before doing things of this nature.
Wow! You need to get yourself some anti-spam software! Seriously though, I doubt very much that they'll be keeping any of that money, which brings me to my next point. This is the media after all, and reading between the lines, I would expect that the 9 years is not mainly down to the spam emails, but rather the act of selling fraudulent products on such a grand scale.Originally Posted by abelony
Also remember that this is a jury decided sentence and so I reckon the judge will reduce it anyway.
9 years seems WAY over the top.
Not to mention the fact that people rarely serve the full sentence they're given anyway. Most people who are given "life sentences" get parole long before their life is over.
Those emails are going into the bulk folder but I end up going through them every day because the anti-spam software is not very accurate .Originally Posted by chromate
That is the most obvious assumption. As far as the 9 years, I too think it's a little extreme but I think they are trying to send a message to the phishers and scammers out there that they will pay the price.Originally Posted by chromate
9 years might sound extreme but I don't think it is. This guy made close to $30 million. From what it sounds like the e-mails were scams. I don't understand why he was hanging around in the US.
Now if someone was sending out a small volume of legitimate e-mails and got sent to jail for 9 years, then there woudl really be something to complain about.

Ah, I was thinking 9 years was a bit harsh just for spamming, but making $30 million from scam emails, it seems a bit more reasonable.Originally Posted by Cutter
I just hope some of that $30m is paying for his 9 years, and not the American tax payer.
having read the entire news item they didnt get 9 years for the spam, they got it for the con they were pulling. But regardless considering what you can get for manslaughter 9 years for this is completely whacked.
