Alternatives to mod_rewrite for search engine-friendly URLs for CGI files

Alright, well, I hear that mod_rewrite can bring a server to it's knees and well, quite frankly I suck at making mod_rewrite and was wondering if there are any other ways to make MrRat's Amazon Products Feed be search engine-friendly without it?

I've read Chris' article; however, I believe it's more PHP-oriented.

CGI will bring it to it's knees long before mod_rewrite does. mod_rewrite will slow it down if you have a god aweful amount of rules to go through. But to make Mr. Rat's script SE friendly you would only need like 5 or 6 rules tops.

Nintendo's mod_rewrite hack is some odd 40 or 50 lines.

So, are there any free PHP AWS scripts out there? I know the server could handle quite a bit and I'm actually being encouraged by the friend I'm hosting with to test it's limits, but I'm thinking of something that's a bit less.. evil? I need a thesaurus...

It works well too - easy to install/configure, I have a couple of sites using it.
