    Data recovery services

One of the users I support has a dead hard drive and no backup. Can anyone recommend a good data recovery service for recovering data from a dead laptop drive?

I checked out ontrack.com based on their good reputation and was given a quote of $700 - $2200. Does anyone know of a cheaper alternative that will still do a good job?

I'm not sure, but make a page about it, put google ads on, and tell your friend to go to it... If he checks out quite a few services you might make that $700 back...

Well, I froze the hard drive (that's right, like in a freezer, as in BBBBRRRRRRRR.) and was able to get everything copied before it died again. Let's hear it for crazy urban legends!

Good work Westech! Will have to remember that.

Lucky you solved it yourself, given the 'on-topicness' of the replies on this thread

Tip: if you try this yourself, put it in a ziploc bag with the air squeezed out to keep moisture off the drive.

In my case, as the drive heated back up it failed again. I ended up turning my air conditioner all the way up and leaving the laptop on it while I copied the files.

No worries. It's no different from how any other thread here ends up. I kind of enjoy the informal atmosphere.
