    PNG image format?

Does anyone use the PNG image format? I find, it generates much smaller files, but I've heard that not all browsers support it. Anyone know any downside to using them?

I think most browsers support them these days. The earlier browsers didn't. I have used them without complaints.

PNG is an uprated version of GIF type compression I believe - it allows more than 256 colours, and should, as you have found, create smaller files.

It also allows for layer transparency, which .gif does not. This layer transparency is still *not* supported by IE, though most other browsers do. The best reasy for using png files is this new transparency, so it makes it almost useless when the market leader of browsers doesn't support it. Totally sucks.
