How do you increase the number of backlinks to your website?

Apply for directories, find revelent sites and email them requesting links, or link exchanges.

I try to go around some of the sites in my topic area and request links quite often. You'll get new sites poping up and others that just are coming back into the search engines, its just a matter of finding people and asking.

You can search on Google for your keywords and "add url" or "submit url" "add site" "submit site" etc. Also, check the backlinks of your competitors.
