I have paid. I can't really recommend one though. It isn't a huge expense to get one.
You definitely don't want a free one that is going to require a spammy footer link.
I didn't use any Wordpress yet. But one of my friends is in this profession, if you really like to get new and fresh theme, let me know. I give you his contact info.
I have always created my own but I have seen a lot of talk about thesis.
I would pay for a custom one, but not one that is already made.
