    Domain buying, site setup question?

A family member is setting up some travel guide sites. He has asked me if he needs to buy one domain to blanket each area he is covering (using the location as sub directories):

    www.blanket.com/area1
    www.blanket.com/area2
    www.blanket.com/area3

or seperate domains for each area with the location keyword included

    www.seperatearea1.com/
    www.seperatearea2.com/
    www.seperatearea3.com/

I advised the second, as these sites are going to be quite large and wanted to avoid empy sections... plus if she ever wanted to sell any, she could do so more easily.

But I am interested in your opinions... I could be totally wrong here

It depends... both have pros and cons.

When I started my literature site I did as #2, but then I switched to #1, it ended up being better for me.

Volume of content I guess would be an issue, if you think you'll have hundreds or thousands, the one site method will work, and indeed cross-site linking is less valuable than internal-site linking so a big site has a SEO benefit.

But if you think you'll go slow and just do a handful, then individual sites is probably best, especially if the locales are unrelated.
