You can put a link in your profile but I think all tweets are "no follow"

You cant use it directly for backlinks, only to drive traffic from those reading your tweets. If they then link to you (via their blog for example) you will get your backlink.

Bear in mind that Twitter does use rel="nofollow" on its links (though I have heard they do allow passing on their mobile links).

In yahoo site explorer, you can see almost links including nofollow. I definitely agree with you. Only in Google you will not see it because as what the twitter do is they put rel=nofollow attribute on links.

http://twitter.com/robots.txt also shows they don't let spiders look at your twitter page either.

Getting backlinks from twitter is very easy. In the upper part of your twitter page there is a textbox where you can type your twit (a term use in twitter referring to your post). Just type what you can say (but be warned that there is only 140 characters available in the textbox) follow by the URL of the site (you can also use bit.ly) then click update in the lower right of the textbox.

The No Followed links appear both on Yahoo Site Explorer and Google Webmaster Tools pages. They do not pass PR but still are counted as backlinks.

In Twitter, more followers more backlinks you made for traffic of your website.
