So I've just bought my first server...

With hostony, should be set up within 24 hours, I'll let you know how it goes, it has two control panels, including CPANEL, $195 a month, no set up...

But what will I be able to do that I haven't before? What is cool about servers? Got any ideas of what I can do with it apart from for websites? Home network managing?

Was looking at dedicated servers in a mag - one idea I hadnt thought off was running a games server... not sure how that could make any cash though?

Gameservers need way to much maintenance and you need a couple to mae money from it.

The only plan for $195 they have:
    CPU 2200 Mhz AMD XP
    Memory 512 MB
    HDD 60 gb
    IPs 8
    Bandwidth 1000 Gb
    Control panel WHM/Cpanel

I didn't read that page in detail, is the server unmanaged, semi-managed, or fully managed?

I honestly think you wasted that money, unless you do something else other than hosting.

    It's managed - Fully.

The control panels are WHM/Cpanel, but I have an OS choice, RH9, Fedora, or FreeBSD? Which should I pick?

FreeBSD, although CPanel seem to provide more regular updates for Red Hat.

What are you going to use it for? Why did you feel you needed it?

Just websites... I also want to be able to provide hosting. I want streaming capabilities, so I might need a special OS for that. Can you guys copy and paste a short description of each for me to choose from please...

If you're going to provide hosting to others, then I'd choose FreeBSD.
