Would adding an html extension make a huge difference?
an article site i run can be set to 2 different settings - dynamic and static
http://www.domain.com/?m=show&id=1 - dynamic
It will be:
http://www.domain.com/catidhere/art_1.html - static
will there be a big difference in the search engines if i switch to the html extension?

There probably will be yes, as that is more like a search engine friendly URL.

Its the not addition of the extension but the removal of the query string.

Yeah, just remove the ?, but don't put the .html on the end.
