As my new AWS site is a review site, not a shop site, I want the search and browse pages to show a small description instead of prices and availability. Can I do this in Lite or will I have to use heavy?

You'll have to use heavy to get anything not provided by light. I think in the future they plan to let you request the nodes you need.
How would I use a mysql database to bring up different node categories? Chris seems to do it, but whenever I try I get errors...
