Another great technique is editing wiki's such as wikipedia to include citations to your site, but only use this when you've added genuinely useful information to them or your link will be speedily removed. Wikipedia itself is no follow, but you'll often find others will cite you if you are cited in wikipedia, often because people don't like citing wikipedia but need a citation so look for where wikipedia got the info from.
