I had 48 backlinks to my site about 1 mouths ago, they dropped down to 18 links. All the links are still there but why would I loose so many backlinks within such a short time

Google does not show all the backlinks it knows about.
.... in the link: google search anyways.
Make a Google Webmaster Central account and look at your links there, they show a much more conclusive list.
To see all the backlinks you have use Yahoo site explorer
Not all inbound links we consider as important work for SEO. I have also saw a lot of the inbound links we get not to count in Google.

Google changes often. I think there are lots of factors that made this happened.
