page redirection question

Hi everybody,

I am currently in process of reorganization of my site structure. I am specifically interested about one page, that should be moved from root location to:
"articles/page.html"

Problem is that page is kinda popular and I got a quite amount of visitors from search engines on that one.

My question is: should I make some kind od redirection on "page.html" to "articles/page.html" to minimize damage ?

Any other suggestion on this matter? What would you do?

If you absolutely have to move it, yes, do a 301 redirect.

However... do you absolutely have to move it? Established pages with external incoming links should have their URLs avoid being changed. Even with a redirect there is always a little loss in my experience.

I remember Chris saying something very similar (or the same) to me a while ago. I did a 301 redirect of all major URLs because i was changing from static .php to search engine friendly URLs. And even with the 301 i lost a lot of traffic for a few months, then the traffic came back.
