HEy, I have just design my first site, http://www.weekendgolfer.co.uk Ofcourse I am now looking to improve my position in the search engines. I am trying to build backlinks ect and have seen these sites offering submission of your url to x amount of engines and directories. IS this a good idea to use these services and if so which one should I use? Something free would be ideal!!

I wouldn't bother with them.

Submit to the better directories. The search engines will probably have picked up your site already from your link here. Indeed Google has :http://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Aweekendgolfer.co.uk

Well, the big ones, http://www.botw.org http://www.dmoz.org http://www.yahoo.com

Then you can get a list of others from directorycritic.com

I was thinking to publish a few of my sites in the Yahoo directory, but I decided against it. I don't see any value in a link buried deep in their directory on a page with PR 0, which costs $300 per year.

None of the sites I submitted to dmoz in the last 2 years wre published and I'm talking about sites with original content.

botw.org is the only one worth a look in my opinion.
