That's Queen Elizabeth the 1st, you rarely heard anything about her.

the one at moment, Queen Elizabeth II is still alive.. right?

But that does raise the point, why do they have a (powerless?) monarchy.

Ha Ha Queen Elizabeth 1 lived 1533 – 1603.

The Queen Mother was married to George VI, the previous King. (She still died a while ago though)

Well that would make more sense, I just read the tagline on the photo on the bbc page, and deduced wrongly that it was the elizabeth the first, haha.
