In one of my forums I have lots of members that register but never write anything, the forum is open for guests to read everything and they are not spammers, I donīt get it !

Any thoughts on why people would register a forum and never write - personally I only join a forum if I have something to say.

Thanks

There are many reasons for this.

1. Delayed spam, many spammers setup the accounts to spam long before they actually post.

2. They may have registered to just PM a question to someone.

3. They might be registered, but maybe they never activated their account with the email confirmation, so they can't actually post.

4. They probably registered to access to a portion of the website that's not accessible to guests so they can lurk.

Chris hit the nail on the head! It is most likely spammers who either did not finish the verification or they are PM spamming.

Of course, they could have signed up for hoping that the action will increase so they can jump in.

When I had a forum, I did nothing with it for a couple of months and when I came back to it, I had 2300 members and only 120 posts. It is not uncommon.
