I would like to try selling advertising on my site directly to companies within my niche. Has anyone else done this? Does anyone know of any good resources for me to check out before I get start?

The main things I need help with are setting prices and ad serving.

If there's a popular term for selling ad space like this I'd like to know that too. At the moment I'm not sure what to search for.

Thanks.

Direct sales is practiced by the big sites who have their own human sales force to acquire customers and negotiate deals. Though the CPM is much higher than what you get form ad networks, the bar for acceptance is also much higher and the deals are more complicated. The usual buyers are ad agencies who manage campaign for the advertisers. Do you have the volume and visitor demographics to make them want to talk with you? This is a different ball game.

If your niche is local, you can get local advertisers but expect more efforts to get decent customer pool and lower CPM.
Another possibility is to sell though sales outsourcing organizations who basically do the selling for you, for a fee of course. Those guys often represent many smaller publishers with joint volume and quality as a package that is good enough for the advertiser to deal with. Federate Media is one such example.

You can sell text links on your site through company li text link ads. They will find advertisers for your site and than you get paid per monthly basis.

I have been doing this for several years. I try and keep 5-6 advertisers at all times, right now I am full with 6.

if your site gets "big enough" they will come to you, which is how it happened with me.
