We all know that the google link: command only shows a fraction of your backlinks. Well, google just updated it's webmaster central and you can now see up to 1 million of your backlinks. Awesome. You can even export them TO CSV.

Looks like a nice addition. Be more useful if you could use it for sites other than your own though.

Ah that's a lot better now. Like Dan says though, it would be good to check out other sites as well. I needed something like that this morning...

Yahoo still allows you to check other sites.

The Links tab in Webmaster Tools just disappeared for me. Looks like they have taken it down. Just as I was checking another of my sites. Thought I was going crazy.:confused:

This news was posted everywhere. They probably got bombarded.

It's still up and working for me though.

Did you get that data with your own manipulation Ken? Or am I missing something from within Google's interface?

I downloaded the CSV file and then ran some queries on it. A poor mans way of doing it would be to open the CSV file in a text editor like UltraEdit and do searches for specific strings (e.g. .EDU/ ) and use the counting option of the search feature to count the number of instances.

In my case I imported the file into Microsoft Access and then ran some queries. The following query allowed me to see how many links I got for different ccTLDs (it assumes that I imported the link data into a table called "tblExternalLinks":

SELECT IIf([Links] Like "*.[a-z][a-z]/*",Mid([Links],InStr(10,[Links],"/")-2,2)) AS CountryCode, Count(tblExternalLinks.Links) AS CountOfLinks
FROM tblExternalLinks
WHERE (((tblExternalLinks.Links) Like "*.[a-z][a-z]/*"))
GROUP BY IIf([Links] Like "*.[a-z][a-z]/*",Mid([Links],InStr(10,[Links],"/")-2,2))
ORDER BY Count(tblExternalLinks.Links) DESC;

In Access that query could be quickly modified to search for other results like the following query to find EDU sites under specific ccTLDs:

SELECT IIf([Links] Like "*.[a-z][a-z]/*",Mid([Links],InStr(10,[Links],"/")-2,2)) AS CountryCode, Count(tblExternalLinks.Links) AS CountOfLinks
FROM tblExternalLinks
WHERE (((tblExternalLinks.Links) Like "*.edu.[a-z][a-z]/*"))
GROUP BY IIf([Links] Like "*.[a-z][a-z]/*",Mid([Links],InStr(10,[Links],"/")-2,2))
ORDER BY Count(tblExternalLinks.Links) DESC;

I decided to compare Google's new link tab to Yahoo's Site Explorer.

For my environmental chemistry site, Google is reporting just over 27,000 links while Yahoo is reporting over 41,000 links. At the same time I believe the number to be over 50,000. The advantage of Google's new links tab over Yahoo's Site Explorer is that Google will allow you to download all links while Yahoo will only allow one to download the first 1,000 links.

I'd love to be able to get a CSV file of all links to my site and to what pages the links lead to. This would really help me track what are the most popular pages and what article topics generate the most links.

Some people are reporting that they are finding the new tool really useful for finding site scrapers.

You have to sign up and log in to use this tool right ??? :bawling:

Yes you have to sign up to use it. You also need to verify that you own the site in question by placing a specific file Google provides in the root directory.

this is not fair...like other tools, Google should allow to use this tool for checking other sites also;:ladysman:
