Something that I've never really understood is how to decide what heading gets what? Like I know there can only be on h1 tag per page, but from there, how do you decide how many h2 tags your page gets? h3's? etc...?

Who says you can only have 1 H1 per page?

Hmmm...can't remember who, but could have swore that's what I've read before for SEO purposes. I'll try to verify that.

I've never heard that, why would search engines do that anyways? It doesn't jive with the actual HTML use of the tags.

H tags are for headers of sections of content. You can think of them like an outline

H1
>h2
>h2
>>h3
>>h3
>>>h4
>>h3
>h2
>>h3
H1
>h2
>h2
>>h3
>>h3
>>>h4
>>h3
>h2
>>h3

You can have as many of them on a page as you need.

If there is a certain "bonus" or weight for your H1 text, then that weight is likely calculated with a percentage. So 2 H1 tags do not get you double points, the words within them just get added together so it is like you have 1 tag, with half the keyword density. Get it?

I get it when it's put like that (like I see it on every example) but when I try to plug that into an actual website, I get confused.

Take my layout for example: kentuckygolfing.com

The content at the top left I'm going to have two sections there. A "Featured Course" and "Featured Article" section, so do both of those get H1's? Then in the top middle (light gray) I'm maybe going to have "Recent Posts" then under that "Categories" and then underthat "Archives", so do all of those get H2's? Or does the one at the top get an H2, then h3 for the next below it and so on?

Found the link. LoL...it was actually another thread here where KLB told me that there should only be one per page. http://www.websitepublisher.net/forums/showthread.php?t=6306&highlight=heading+tags
