Google updated backlinks for my site today. PR hasn't been updated yet I think.

Strange, I checked my backlinks now again and they're back to the same they were yesterday. I'm sorry for getting your hopes up but this morning they were updated or whatever they were.

Edit: Something is definitely going on as I see my backlinks randomly change from new ones to the old ones. I'm guessing that the update is in the works and I've noticed some changes in my SERP as well.

I'm seeing an update just on www-gv. It appears to be a new update, but for some reason it shows me with less backlinks. :\

My backlinks have decreased, but my PR increased :)

Will have to wait and see about SERPS.

Yey... My PR has gone up to 5 for all my sites (apart from chrosys) and my backlinks have increased too. If things go to plan, this will reflect well in the SERPs on the next update.

Edit -- Oh, it's just gone down again. This update's obviously still not over.

I could care less about the PR updating.

PR is nothing without the SERPs updating! If I recall correctly, SERPs haven't updated in at least 2 months.

As far as I see the SERPs are changing as well. I've moved up on certain keyword and moved down on others.

That's exactly why you should care about PR updates; because eventually the SERPs will update.

Even if it doesn't update for a bit, like I've said earlier- there are fringe benefits for PR increases.

Mike, you lost alot of your backlinks by taking away that side nav menu...

Mike
12-28-2003, 03:16 AM
Yeh, I am putting another new design up this week, which will use a nav bar with all the categories. They probably won't show up as backlinks though, as they'll only be linked to from the homepage.

With "about 5,530,000" results when searching for 'Free Online Games' (no quotes), I should imagine it would take some time to get anywhere near the top! I thought 1.7m was bad for 'Casino Reviews'!

Have you tried using this tool (http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/keywords/) to check your position in SERPs?

incka
12-28-2003, 07:14 AM
I have, yes.

I got a KEI from wordtracker of 80,000 when 400 is excellent and 10 is poor...

So I should easily be albe to get my site on...

chromate
12-28-2003, 07:28 AM
As I've said so many times... ignore the KEI ! It's practically useless!

ozgression
12-28-2003, 06:28 PM
Yeah the KEI is not useful at all. Focus on the keyword density & PR of the sites at the top.

I also believe that Google favours "older sites" as it seems all the search results I get for my chosen keywords are old and outdated sites.

Google doesnt favour older sites, its just that they are likely to have more backlinks, and hence be higher in the SERPs.

ozgression
12-29-2003, 04:38 PM
I disagree. Whilst SOME older sites will have more backlinks, most don't. Most have not been updated for atleast a year or two and only have links from there own site.

For some of my search terms, i have more backlinks than those at the top. Having said that, I rank pretty well on alot of terms.

Ok, fair enough, I think though that the reason they are higher is not directly due to the fact they are older - but some indirect effect of being older.

Part of the Google ranking algorithm will not put older sites higher - it would just make it an outdated SE.

There is something else that puts them higher - maybe more of their backlinks are from "on-topic" sites?

Ok so Google did update now ( or one of the previous days , didn't keep track of it really ).

I'm nowhere to be found anymore for "web design" So incoming link-text and titles certainly lost a lot of importance in this update :)

Mike
12-30-2003, 09:42 AM
web design is a competitive word though isn't it.

12-30-2003, 09:45 AM
I was on the 2de place (Google belgium ) for "webdesign" when I optimized for that word. I changed from "webdesign" to "web design" to see if I could get as high as the first time but well like I said , they completely dropped me. I don't really care since I was only playing to see how high I could get.

Yeah well it's either the importance of incoming link-text that was decreased or the importane of actual content is increased ... or a combination of both.

After everything I've been reading about post-florida I think the easy SEO days are over.

Yeah man I know exactly what you mean ...
I'm here to learn and observe ... I havn't published any websites yet to make any money since there are a few reasons which don't allow me to do so right now. I'm interested in this for the future. What I fear most is that by the time I will be able to actually start publisching websites ( could be a few years ), search engines and the whole internet will have changed so much that it will become virtually impossible to make any decent money this way.

Difficulty is irrelevant.

You only have to be better than everyone else, and its just as hard for them too.

Mike
12-30-2003, 11:52 AM
I don't think it's over. If you build your sites structure right then you should have no problems.

That's exactly the point. No one quite knows what to do in order to be "better than everyone else" :) No one seems to know what "better" is in SEO terms anymore.

One thing I am trying to figure out is, once a site is seemingly peenalized, does it stay penalized for good or are you able to rectify your SEO misgivings to resume your former position. Is that possible? Or is it a case of "once you're out, you're out" ?

My Weight Loss Tips site seems to be "out" at the moment (apart from the sub pages). I hope it doesn't stay that way.

Mike
12-30-2003, 01:53 PM
I don't think it's like getting banned. I think if you submitted again, editting what you think is the cause, then you should be ok.

chromate
12-30-2003, 02:09 PM
Yeah, Weight Loss Tips gets crawled almost daily by Google. Yet it's no where to be seen in the SERPs. I've tried decreasing keyword density etc but it hasn't had any effect. Maybe I'll decrease it further and see what happens. I'll also change some of the backlink anchor text.

I've added more on-page content and decreased the the keyword density in just about every other place. I'll see if that does the trick and then work on backlink's anchor text if need be.

Even if you didnt though, it should still ask for it and I think you would get a 404 in your logs?

Any idea how long it takes from first spidering to being listed? Does searching at www2.google.com or www3.google.com get your pages earlier?
