selling subscriptions?

Has anyone here had any success selling subscriptions?
i was thinking of converting one of my sites to subscription, would like to know of other peoples experiences.

It is a very profitable thing to try.

The thing is though, free content gets more visitors and more links. So really, my recommendation is to stay a free site, but add a premium tier of content that users must buy a subscription to access. IT could be as simple as the same content, but ad free, or it could be newer higher quality content.
