I'm a complete novice here at trying to promote a site..
and I am trying to understand a few concepts.

backlinks.. now I take I understood this correct.
its the links you link out of your site to another site.
i.e outbound links.
as opposed to inbound where someone links to you..

now if I got it right, how the heck do you create these back links.
I have quite a few links on my site and yet google is saying I have no backlinks?
I don't understand unless
it can't traverse phpnuke sites very well.

admitedly the site has oly been up about 3 weeks. but I would have expected it to have found a couple of them already.
basically all the ones in my weblinks section. which is broken down into a thousand sections.

just out of curiosty would having referal id's on the end of say www.anyaddress.com have problems with this backlinking?

I would post the site address but I don't won't to be seen as advertising

backlinks are links pointing to your site, they are the same thing as an incoming or inbound link.

Google can't travers phpnuke sites very well.

3 weeks is not long enough, it can take as long as 7 or 8 weeks.

Referral IDs on URLs pointing to your site definitely matter in these regards.

Google does not crawl URLS with the word "id" in them...

Oh okay I see, I was getting it the wrong way round.

and me thinking it was the links going out of your site..

Thanks for the explanation.. so yeah I can understand now why it could quite a few weeks to get them now .

the type of site I am trying to slowly set up has the a big potential to get links to it..

its a paid to read site. well I'll be linking to them.. I am looking at trying to setup a like resource/information center for about all the other sites...
is having a two link okay.
or is it advantagous to only have them linking to me..

if I read your site..Chris I take it they have their pro's and con's
and I guess I shouldn't worry to much about it as I dare say it will take time.

Just one thing I was checking my links on google and the description is pulling loads of weird stuff.
like

There are currently, 1 guest(s) and 0 member(s) that are online. You are

any ideas what the search engine searches on PHP site.
as I wanted it to read something coherenet like a description..

Sorry, I'm not sure what your question is. Can you clarify?

sorry guess I wasn't being to clear about the last bit

if you search Google for my whole domain I get this
[qoute from Google]
Dark World
There are currently, 1 guest(s) and 0 member(s) that are online. You are
Anonymous user. You can register for free by clicking here. Amazon. Hits ...
[/end qoute from google]

now I kind was expecting something a little different.. the above is what it 'spidered' that the correct definition?
i.e the above is from one of the module blocks on my php site..

now I thought it would get something from the meta file or robots.txt or something like.

I was hoping that the description of the site would be something like for instance ..

find out all the latest updates, news links of paid to read programs..

is there away I can put in a text file the description I want displayed on the search engines?

Google normally takes whatever text is shown first on your page. I don't think there's any way to alter that description beyond changing that text.

Thanks
you know what I just think I found that out for myself :D

its only taken me 5 hrs of searching to determine what the heck google pulled that weird amount of info for.
its annoying in away.. becuase that doesn't sum up my site whats so ever..

Google descriptions are generated on the fly based on what your search terms are.

PHP is server side, Google doesn't look at individual PHP components -- it can't. It sees only the fully rendered page.

That description for your site is only going to show up for the search you made, if you find your site on another search it will use a different description.

Google does process entries with ID in them.

Check out this example
http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=festive+nuts&meta=

First website is mine, and it uses and ID

No it doesn't.

Google's problem is with the variable "ID"

Not "BasketsID" or "sid" it has to be exact.

darkstonexa google only ranks backlinks from sites ranked 4 or above. So it pays to swap links with higher ranked sites. Of course new sites that show potential are also a good link. I know a lot of people advise against it but places like link partners can help you get a start with the backlinks.
Some people don't like these "link Farms" but they do help with the rankings even if they are a fishy sort of cheat way to do it.. you can set the preferences to so that you don't link to sites that I personally dislike like ...viagraonline and stuff like that

I have found..and i ma be wrong...Google gives the search result usually around the first instance of the search string used .... so if your site is joe bloggs web publisher

your opening line might have hello and welcome to joe bloggs web publisher

then google is most likely to use that in the result if you searched for web publisher

however if it was titled Joe Bloggs

and the text Joe Bloggs was halfway down the page, that is usually what google will return as the main result...

darkstonexa google only ranks backlinks from sites ranked 4 or above.

Slightly incorrect. Google only lists backlinks from PR4 sites or above. Google counts all backlinks regardless of the PR of the linking site.
