I was thinking about compiling a list of sites that offer free stock photography, if your interested just post a link here. I'll start:

http://www.sxc.hu/

They're not free to use. I only use http://www.sxc.hu/ for free stuff.

My bad...missed the "free" part. For free pix, sxc is the best by far.

I keep seeing "free stock photos", but when I look closely at the terms of use there always seem to be at least some restrictions. For example, if I am looking for an image to sell on a poster, I think I have to take my own.

Yeah the free stock images are usually free for personal use, not commercial. You can't stick the images on say...a poster and sell them.

I have found plenty on sxc.hu that have no restrictions...

It is annoying though when you find the perfect one, then it has restrictions - is there any way you can limit the search to ones with no restrictions?

I have only been using www.istockphoto.com lately. Their images are so cheap, and the selection is amazing.

That is a very cool site. I like how you can mouseover the image for a preview. Most of the ones I looked at were only $1 for 800x600. cheap!

You can use Flickr's Creative Commons pool of images (http://magazine.websiteservices.com/blogs/posts/archive/2006/01/19/website_images.aspx) with proper attribution. I use photos.com regularly but CC is something I have considered recently.

Istockphoto is pretty good on selection, I've used them quite often for designs I've done when I needed something I couldn't take a pic of myself.

It's also nice that I put a few dozen pics up there when it first started, and about once a year I get a check from them for a $100 or so.

morguefile.com is awesome.

I find most of the pics I need in their archives.
