Hello everyone,

I have a question...

Let's suppose I have a website that gets 60,000 uniques per day.

With a CPM of 1$, does it means I would make 60$ a day?

Is CPM based on hits or uniques?
When someone hit "refresh", does it count for 2 hits ?

When advertising companys put on their pages CPM of 1$ for example, do that 1$ includes their commission?

Thank you for your future response,
Congrats for this great website!!

(ps. sorry for my bad english, it's my third language)

CPM is based on impressions (page views). So when someone hits refresh, it counts twice.

Different adnetworks market differently. For some the rates they publish are gross (before their commission) for some they are net (after their commission).

Thank you for the fast reply Chris!

"Let's suppose I have a website that gets 60,000 uniques per day.

So am I right on that statement?

Believe me, your English is a lot better than most people with it with their PRIMARY language! ;)

Chris, it varies whether it's for uniques or just hits on the banners between adnetworks, doesn't it?

No. If on average, your visitors generate 10 pageviews each, and non of them block banners or use text based banners, that's 600,000 pageviews a day, or $600 a day. You ready to retire??!! :D:D:D

Thank you for the compliment James!

600$ per day!
That's crazy, I believe it is easy for people who runs big websites like www.ign.com to live only with their websites!

The average CPM is 1-2$ right?

Thx everyone :)

Your average CPM will vary on your site's topic. Sometimes its under $1, some of my sites get over $50 CPM (this kind of traffic is very hard to come by ;)

The big sites like IGN have lots of expenses, but they still come out with a lot of money.

In your opinions, what kind of sites gets the higher CPM? (Generally)

Chris

Sites about expensive things or sites that attract a wealthy audience will get higher CPMs.

Yes, IGN is a large business that has been around for years. They have many employees.

How much you guys think I could get with such stats ?

http://extremetracking.com/open?login=vcdq

Targeted audience is people from 16-30, very familiar with computer/techonolgys.

What do you think would be the best company to choose ? (I already red the guides, I would like your personal opinions :)

Thank you in advance!

Do you run vcdquality yourself? Your main problem will be getting advertiser because most TOS prohibit that type of site.

weirdmonkey

Hi Cutter,

No I don't run vcdquality.

However, their is nothing illegal about that site.

CNN.com reports crimes like murders, rapes, etc...vcdquality reports internet's release.

Whether it is illegal or not though is not the point. Some types of sites are excluded by some ad sites TOS, e.g. you cant run Adsense on gambling sites, even though they are also legal.

Oh right.
What you think would be the best "alternative" for someone running such website?

Thank you!

Here is some examples of wealth:

Our own Chris, makes about $1300 gross a day I think.
Ebaumsworld.com - Started when guy was in high school, now he owns a $10 million office block for his website.
Google - started in college with just 2 guys now...

about ebaumsworld.com

"The site's success has made Eric Bauman a multimillionaire, allowing him to buy a $150,000 house and an $850,000 office building in Brighton."

His site isn't even good looking :P

Usually the uglier the site, the more money it makes, take a look at about.com :D

As for a site like vcdquality, I'd go with affiliate programs & would promote adult programs or premium usenet servers. I really have no idea what kind of CPM these would deliver -- it all depends on traffic quality.

Seriously, if you are thinking of starting a site don't worry about CPM right now. Getting traffic should be priority #1

Thank you for the tips Cutter!

Anyone else has something to add?

Speaking of IGN, take a look at this: http://biz.gamedaily.com/articles.asp?article_id=10064#10064

"IGN owners Great Hill partners were recently looking for someone to purchase the company, and then priced IGN for over $800 million dollars."

By the way, IGN also is part of Gamespy

I dunno, Nintendo doesn't seem to be making more than them.
And I think that their design could be pretty decent if they:
- got rid of the little orb/sphere things beside everything
- made those lines in the navigation seperate each link, instead of just making them hard to read
- made the search on the top right vertically centered, and the background lighter
- got rid of the diagonal lines in the first box in the navigational section

I dunno, Imagine Games Network has been around for a long time, and is the one source you can be sure that every game developer and publisher feeds through a spoon. They're probably getting millions of dollars worth of free stuff from those companies....

I agree that your best bet, weirdmonkey, would be to go with things such as adults websites, which will both allow you into their networks and allow high CPM.

Would someone be kind enough to a company that does what James and Cutter said, "adult" advertising networks?

Thank you in advance! =)

James

Well, it's interesting, because for some reason xbox-scene.com is also linked to from xbox.com so I think that they've got something weird going on there...

weirdmonkey

James,
Could you explain a little more?
I don't see how Xbox.com would like xbox-scene.com since it's an xbox hacking site.

Where do you see the link from xbox.com?

James

It was recently linked under their http://www.xbox.com/en-ca/community/ section.

weirdmonkey

Hm...I highly doubt that, I can't see why MS would like to a site that promotes "hacking" of their consoles.

Thx again guys!

Hello again guys ,

I was wondering if I run two Banners on the same site and on the same page, and if it's for example a 1$ CPM, are the pageviews of those banners combined, or 1000 pageviews would be a total of 2$ ?

Also, what is the diffrence between eCPM and CPM ?

Thank you again!

James

1) I think it usually counts as $2.00--if it's 2 differnt ad networks, then it's definitely $2.00
2) https://www.google.com/adsense/glossary#ecpm
