I think that the first suggestion is a pretty good idea. However, I'veI's got more tips on how to make a perfect popup. First of all, it is better to do it unavoidable (big, and the screen behind darker). That way, there'll be no person who didn't see the popup. Try to make it colourful and interesting, so it is pleasant to look at. That way, a person may slow down and don't close it the second it appears. I suggest using controversial pictures, o those which are interesting to look at, or those which hint at something free or bonus. We all like this stuff, pretty much.
