I'm wondering, how much time do you usually spend on link exchanges.

Let's say #hours on a average week ?

I spend about 1 hour a week working on link exchanges. I should spend a lot more time getting good quality backlinks to my sites :)

To put it simply: way too little time. I just hunt down people to exchange links with whenever I feel like it.

Not enough :)

It used to be about three or four, but now, very little.

Very little. I get a lot of people contacting me for exchanges through my sites. But they tend to be rubbish and not worth it like PR2 viagra sites :)

I should spend more time looking for good link exchanges. It's so hard these days with LocalRank to consider too.

Tell me about it, I was stupid enough to sign up with one of those
link exchange websites (hint market) and all I get are requests from those
kind of sites. Pretty useless when it comes to relevance.

Yes, I can't even stop those emails. Do you know how to stop them and unsubscribe/delete my account there?

Good question I was looking for that earlier on, changing my email
address obviously wasn't smart enough.

When I did my plan at the start of the year, (which I blatently didn't stick to), I scheduled 1 day per week for this to cover all my sites....

.....however, I find it really boring and I'm well lazy!! I haven't done any for a long while :(

...actually I was thinking of dividing my links up into different pages to reduce the amount of links on each and make me more attractive to exchange with.....Will this reduce the PR does anyone know? I only have PR2 on my links page on Dr. Phil, all the others are really new and have NO PR :(

Cheers,

Cat

Yeah, if you create another level that splits into different pages then the PR of those pages will be less than the page linking to them.

...so the original page wouldn't be affected then? Because effectivley I would be taking some contnt out of that page, (the links) and place it on another page?

Not really sure what you're getting at? Affected in terms of PR? The site overall will retain more PR as you're placing the links deeper into the site. More of the PR will be bled off and sent back to your other pages before it reaches your links pages.

He means that the original page would lose PR by having links to the other pages; PR leakage.

When I first launch a site I usually spend 2 solid days.

I've got to be honest here: I hate trying to do link exchanges. Not so much the part about being a lot of repetitive work but more about how hard it is to actually get the links. Sometimes a full day of work might get me 2 medium-quality sites. (I only go for relevent links.)

I've actually had a lot more success doing link exchanges for my gaming site than my niche sites. I'm seriously considering outsourcing someone fulltime to build links for me.

Yeah, the first part of it finding sites, putting their links up, sending them an email is dull but if that's what it takes... . The actual worst part of it, is that only a small fraction of that day's work even get's you a link.

See, the thing that is (most?) important (right now) is getting backlinks.
Everybody thinks he's not doing it enough and finds it boring. Odd isn't it.

I've considered paying someone to do it too. But I don't think it would work out. You could pay them for a lot of time and not get a lot of results. You could also pay them per link secured, but then they're not gonna get enough money. Do you pay them the same for a pr3 link as you would for a pr5 link etc etc. I don't think it would work out.

James

If you payed them per hour, it'd probably be cheaper to just go around buying the links on sites.

Yeah, the first part of it finding sites...

Not sure if people do this, but rather than emailing random on-topic sites, find another site that has a good few link exchanges, and email those sites as they are more likely to reciprocate your link if they are already exchanging with your source site.

ah indeed r2 has a point. I agree.

For me the worst part about link swaps is that I have to do it with many sites I don't like :(

James

I don't worry enough about getting links to swap with sites I don't find at least decent. I don't tend to get many link exchanges or choose categories with few people in them, though.
