i picked up a visiontek 9600xt with dual output and hooked up my roommates monitor to see how fun dual monitors would be and boy it rocks.....

There are many quantitative as wall as qualitative advantages to Multi-Screen Computing:
>>Increases overall productivity: 20%-50%
>>Solid ROI: 9X Media Productivity Multi-Screens: averages several months
>>Happier and healthier users: More natural relationship between user and their resources

What does dual monitors do? Why's it improve your productivity?

Gives you twice as much screen space, I think. Although I've no idea how it works :) How do you move your mouse from one to t'other?

Mike

That's what I was wondering :)

I've seen one in operation before, it just worked as one large monitor.

how would it improve your productivity? its just a bigger screen.

Saves alt-tabbing I suppose :)

Things like having Dreamweaver maximised on one screen, and Firefox maximised on the other, or maybe Photoshop. Or maybe have the help pages for something.

Yeah, it just works like one big monitor - instead of stopping at the right hand edge, the mouse pointer would just move over onto the right hand screen. I have it on my computer, but have the other screen plugged into the TV for watching movies - I have multiscreen disabled normally.

I think I would find that quite hard to get used to :)

I think I would get used to it quite quickly, it would be good for playing movies on if your screens had very small plastic borders... A real 2:1 screen like at the cinema...

Its the kind of thing that would take a bit of getting used to, but once you get used to it, going back would be quite painful... A bit like the IE to Firefox change.

Whoo! Firefox! (Sorry, I couldn't help myself, it really does rock though, so much better than IE).

i did it once, had two monitors, it was a pain in the neck because they were at two different sizes and at two different refresh rates. I hade a 17" into my Voodoo 3 AGP and a 14" into my Voodoo 3 PCI. One monitor was darker and one was flickering. You really do need two quality monitors, of the same size.

I do a fair bit of word processing so it would be good to have multiple pages side by side. It's also good for traders (stock or fx markets) to have multiple screens. However, I reckon the best thing would be to have multiple screens for Battlefield Vietnam. A 20% increase in kill rates would really help.

I find dual monitors very useful when I'm coding or administering servers. I can have my code or my terminal session open on one screen, and my references (man pages, forums, documentation, etc.) open on the other. I work a lot faster when I don't have to keep losing my place by switching windows.

I wonder if the boss would let me get another monitor... ;) Somehow I doubt it :)

I think this is a cool idea for coding websites, and letting me chat on MSN easier, and things like that, but for the moment I'm not willing to dish out a few hundred dollars for it. Some day I'll get another desk to put somewhere in this house to do this though. Some day.

PS

FIREFOX IS THE GREATEST!

haha rock on firefox! :D

I find this funny that there's any supprise or intrest in dual monitors. I find switching from 2 back to 1 and 1 back to 2 fairly easy tbh. Its not likely to make a noticable difference unless your using really complicated programs that can really pack out two monitors with required information.

For web work i dont see how dual display would help *that* much. 2 networked comps with switch would be better if u ask me.

MarkB

Surely then you would need to physically switch between the two, when dual monitors side by side require there mere movement of your eyeballs?;)

only as much as alt+tab, but you got a new comp worth of power to play with :D

no doubt dual monitors have their place, hell i use that setup all the time! I jst dont think they're really needed for low information work.

hey just get that huge Mac monitor. The 30+ inch one.

It saves alot of time and once you get it going your gonna fall in love with it...

There were a couple reasons i went with this setup i plan to play 8 poker tables at once i get use to it....

I like being able to drag and drop windows onto the other screen...

its gonna be great for researching when you want to compare like 6 or 7 webpages all at once side by side....

I went with the .... Dual crt monitors it takes up alot of space but i like it...

I didnt go with the dual lcds setup instead i just got a matching CRT monitir...
it cost me around 200 bucks for a new monitor that matches mine also another 120 for the video card.... so it was 320 after rebates for the initial investment...

I won that much playing online poker anyhow so i thought its well worth it...

It also looks very cool and all my friends are like whoa...

It helps with design and stuff, because usually I have to find file names and code XHTML and CSS and talk to people on MSN, and like to also browse the internet while doing that.

Or just one screen coding, the other looking at the results.

yea, i like it when you have half an app in one screen and half in the other. It looks cool. I like my 17' single LCD though, after having a 14" CRT :)

James

I only have a 15'' CRT Flatscreen I think :( Maybe it's 17 though; haven't measured it in a while, and it may have grown.

I don't understand the principal of a computer screen that's 30''--there's not much reason, IMHO, to have a screen more than 19'', if you want more work space on the screen, just get another one.

yea, that huge monitor needs like an extremely good graphics card also. The card is like $500.

I recently purchased a HP P4 1.4Ghz PC from ebayfor £95 ($180). The sole reason for my purchase was that it had dual output. I now have 2 identical MOBI 15 inch TFT monitors running on it. It is truly sweet.

Now I can have windows open full screen rather than having them tiled. It great for productivity, no switching between screens, less mouse clicks. You can use one screen to monitor stuff.

As a bonus the 2 TFT screens use 60watts combined which is less than 1 17" CRT monitor so I save money too (and help the planet, something Mr Bush is not too keen on doing, in your face Bush).

Anyhoo save the planet switch too dual screen TFT.

I had to give up my dual monitors at work when I switched jobs, so sad. They are a great productivituy booster
