Go visit abestweb and you'll see hundreds of people making BIG money from their sites.

There's probably less than a million people in the world who make enought money to do this full time, then 99 million who have tried but gave up.

How come we don't see them all then? Yes, I've seen a few thousand on all the boards including abestweb, but I can't think of a full million doing it...

There'll be easily a million people, as at the moment there are 8,058,044,651 web pages in google, and I'd think a lot of those sites would make serious money.

There is no way a million people doing this full time. If you have the site that is 100,000 on alexa you probably won't make enough to live off the money you earn, now a million people with a few websites each... Think about it...

Don't forget people who sell on Ebay and make a fulltime salary.

Additionally: some people would only need to make, say, $20k a year to be able to do this fulltime.

Yeah, there are easily 1 million people doing this full time. You won't see most of them because they are busy doing this full time. Even Sitepoint is maybe 1% of webmasters out there, if that. Like Mark said, a living is relative. Some people will need only 1k or 2k a month to live of off. Now, how many people are getting rich doing this is another question entirely. The number will still be pretty high. I know a couple of guys who are getting rich and they have never set foot near any webmaster community or web site. They both own 1 site each and it makes them loads.

Well, I'd kinda like to know their secret ;)

http://JoeCartoon.com, I really doubt he ever stepped foot near a webmaster community. 1.2 million a year in the site's prime.

I am 100% sure there isn't a million self employed webmasters making $20k a year.

Mike

A million isn't even a lot in terms of people...

MarkB
12-03-2004, 10:02 AM
And don't forget to also take into account all those people making money from online stores ;)

I stand by my statement. Ebay store owners ARE NOT webmasters.

And don't forget the people from non-english speaking countries with non-english websites.

Also, do you guys include the employees of sites like Amazon.com in your numbers?

I bet there are way - way in excess of 1 million people doing this. My step mother makes more than 20k / year with her ecommerce site - yes, profit.

There probably aren't 1 million left handed blue midget webmasters making 20k a year though ;)

I am sure that there are many sites made by people that speak different languages. It is a somewhat humbling thought! Well, to me it is.

Self employed webmasters without ecommerce there isn't 250k of them. Ecommmerce maybe a lot more as you don't need much traffic to get sales.

chrispian

I think your probably way off base. If there were only 1 per 250,000 people in the world there would be more than 250,000 of them. There are probably more than a couple hundred here where I live and there are only about 300,000 people here. Close by, there is bigger city with about a million people and I'm sure they have a few thousand. I think this because I've med dozens of them. I run a local web dev group and over half of them run sites for a living. Some of them run original content magazine sites - that's all they do, publish articles and stories and make all their money off of advertising. Some run handfuls of sites with every scheme possible to make money and quite a few run ecommerce sites. You can add all sorts of requirements to make your number smaller, as I suggested with my blue midget theory. But there are a lot of individual webmasters who make money, probably over a million easy, and that was the original point. I would venture to say that there are over a million without ecommerce and if you add ecommerce then the number jumps to multi-millions without breaking a sweat.

Total pages in google - About 8 billion.
If 1 million webmasters that's only 8000 pages each.
Alexa.com top 100,000. One of my sites is about 100,000 position. It makes $15 or so a day. That's not enough to live off.

Sites in fastclick - Less than 20,000. Azoogleads members, less than 6000.

Arent there about 70,000 AWS members?

I agree with Incka though, I dont think there could be more than a million people making a decent full time wage out of it.
