Does anybody use the 'prebuilt' CMS like Mambo? What are advantages and disadvantages to useing one of these systems?

disadvantage is you dont know the system inside and out. Build your own you know where every line of code is and what it does. So updating and upgrading is a snap, as well as addressing bugs.

Also speed is usually in issue with a prepackaged CMS. They usually do more than you need, thus they create alot of overhead.

Emacipator, did you base your design of your CMS off another one? The one you use looks exceptional.

I followed this tutorial http://www.phpfreaks.com/tutorials/89/0.php to build a simple CMS. Its really not that difficult. Not quite the same level as something like Samba, but like people have mentioned above, maybe thats a good thing.

If you will be updating content regularly then I would definetly recommend something like the above.

It is every growing and if you watch my site semi-regular you will see its also ALWAYS changing. lol. It isnt based off a system, since im not aware of any that does what mine does. MY content system is very much designed for movies and or media. It has a complete admin backend for adding movies, news, etc.

I did a gaming CMS for my game site which is 100 times better then my movie CMS but I learned very quickly what works, and what is a pain in my *** :)

How long did it take you to make a game CMS?

Just wondering, 'cause there are a few of them in the works at http://vgamin.com/forum and they seem to be taking forever...

30minutes. Its not elaborate, but its the same principals as my movie site. News/Reviews/Games/etc.
