Paid search marketing affords businesses the opportunity to advertise within the sponsored listings of a search engine or a partner site by paying either each time their ad is clicked (pay per click) or less commonly, when their ad is displayed (CPM or cost per thousand) or when phone contact is generated!

Paid search refers to any search process where results are dictated by payment from advertisers. However, many associate the term paid search with pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, a specific kind of business relationship where advertisers pay search engines or other Web hosts when ads are clicked, which gives the host entity incentive to display the ads as search results.

A type of contextual advertising where Web site owners pay an advertising fee, usually based on click-throughs or ad views to have their Web site search results shown in top placement on search engine result pages. Some search engines will make it easy for users to determine which search results are natural and which are paid, while others will mix the results making it more difficult for users to determine which are the paid search results. Also called sponsored search.

Paid search marketing campaigns are pay-per-click, or PPC campaigns and the logic behind them can be summarized simply: you bid for ad placement in a search engine's sponsored links for keywords related to your business, then you pay the search engine a small fee for each click.

Paid search advertising involves placing PPC ads on search engines like Google. With paid search ads, businesses bid on ad placement to appear as a sponsored link on the search engine results page. The lower your cost-per-click, the more profit you will make from your PPC ad campaigns.
