View Full Version : Installing Windows 98
Hi all,
I'm trying to install Windows 98 on a new laptop for a friend, but, with it being my first time at installing an OS on a new computer, I'm having a few problems.
My main at the moment is getting this error: "Cannot create a temporary directory. If you have HPFS or NTFS installed on your hard drive, you will need to create an MS-DOS boot partition to setup Windows"
Does anyone know how to get around this? I have a boot disk and cd.
Cheers,
Mike

have you done a repartition and reformating of the drive?
Nope. I'm not that sure what to do. As I said before, I've never started from scratch.
Does what you say involve fdisk? If so, which drive should I do it on?
Thanks :)

it does involve fdisk, and you should do it on the drive the OS will be installed on.

Guide (http://www.win98.windowsreinstall.com/install98cd/indexfullpage.htm)
Try this... I dont know exactly how good it is but try it.
it does involve fdisk, and you should do it on the drive the OS will be installed on.
I take it that will be C? Seeing as most drives with the OS on are that now, I think.
But I get an error, when I put C, something like drive couldn't be found.

Windows 98 on a new laptop?
I think it's second hand, but no OS is on.

Try this first:
(WARNING -- this will erase everything on the hard disk!)
Boot from the boot disk and type "format c:" (without the quotes.) This will take a while and should finish up by saying something like "Drive formatted successfully." If it gives an error message, post it here. If it works, this should format the C: drive so that Windows can see it.
Next run the Windows setup program as you did before. If this doesn't work, post back and I'll give you some other things to try.
The thing is, when I type format c:, it gives an error message. Without looking again I've forgotten what it is, but it's something like "Command not recognised".
Know what's up?

Sounds like your boot floppy disk doesn't have the format program on it. You can download a program to create a new Windows 98 boot floppy disk from www.bootdisk.com . Make sure you get the one that says it's for DOS/Windows 98. Then try booting from that and running "format c:".
I've decided not to do it, seems all to complicated for me :)
Thanks for all the help everyone though.
