I'm trying to set up some country specific advertising and need to know how people in the UK are used to seeing numbers written: Would it look more natural for British people to see the number "one hundred thousand," written as 100,000 or as 100.000 ?

Thanks for any advice you can provide.

Ya, 100,000 without doubt. I don't think I've ever seen 100.000 in the UK. In fact, some people may think that means 100.

100,000,000 or 100 000 000

100.000 is a European thing, I believe...?

Definately 100,000

I dont understand why some countries use . instead of , in that case.

Similarly, some countries use , for decimals eg. 12.34 is written as 12,34

Confusing :)

Yeah, that confuses the heck out of me, too.

I know you brits use that crazy metric system thing, so I thought you might buy into that other confusing European stuff as well. :)

we also still use imperial measures which means we measure distance in miles but fuel comes in litres, area can be in feet and inches or meters, weight can be pounds and ounces or kilos - i think we just like to make things interesting

QI is a TV program hosted by Stephen Fry. Go to www.qi.com. It's interesting facts, the contestants loose points for ordinary answers and gain points for interesting facts.

Alot of the UK isn't religious (including me) and alot of us don't like having a royal family (including me).

I believe that Germany has 100.000 Deutschmark
I'd be able to tell you more educatedly were I still taking German in school--I'm not.

Deutschmark? They don't exist any more. It's Euros there, and hopefully it will be Euros in the UK in no so long of a time...

MarkB

Why? The pound is stronger than the Euro. The Euro fluctuates too much.

incka

The strength of the pound is BAD for people in the UK getting cheques from the US.

We need to intergrate with Europe more, a united Europe is a stronger Europe.

Forget about your checks, think about other things. Imagine how much it's going to cost shops to change their cash systems etc. Also, I bet some business' put up their prices.

It's a stupid idea changing here. A lot of people have grown up with the pound, and to change will just cause chaos imho.

Think of all the chaos having hundreds of currencies around the world causes. I'm a strong supporter of a universal currency.

Mike

Yes, I agree that it does cause chaos. I'd rather that from the start every country would have the same currency. But they don't.

It would be a huge change, and something that isn't necessary.

In the short terms (0-10 years) in would cause a lot of problems, but in the long term it will be so much more useful to everyone in the world. I always think about long term ideas, some of them may seem radical, but that's me.

it was not so long ago that th UK changed from pounds shillings pence - 1972 i think.

that must have been a real change converting to decimal

at least with the Euro it is decimal based.

Also, take Ireland , they had to convert from pounds/punts to euro - now it is like second nature

For Mike and I, 1972 isn't recent...

Strong pound doesnt make good Adsense earning though! I would prefer Euro too I think.

I have jus been watching England though, and may have had a couple or three pints...

It's interesting how easy it is to compare the difference in cultures over the internet. I'm watching the OU game (University of Oklahoma, college football team,) and may have a six pack...

I've got a friend in Pakistan and it is amazing how many things are similar to our culture... Even old wives tales are similar...

No, sure, but it was not that long ago - I was actually using the argument to support your point for a change to Euros

But in any event I would imagine that within a couple of years, if not months the decimal system was the only one most people thought in

MarkB

Changing to the Euro won't change how much you make in Adsense, nor how much those earnings will be able to buy you. All that will change is the numbers in your bank account, and the numbers on price tickets. The difference between the two will always be the same.

incka
10-10-2004, 05:36 AM
Yes, but I think if adsense had considerable number of publishers in the Euro they might pay cheques in that as well as dollars, and eventually the Euro should evolve into an international currency. We are seeing EU type organisations being set up around the world, it is only a matter of time, and getting into it early will mean benifits.
