First off, hope this is the right forum:)

Anyway, just had a look on wordtracker to see how many searches are conducted for "search engines" - and it told me 50000 were?!

I mean, what is the point in searching for that on a search engine? Maybe a few hundred, but 50000?

Can't believe it:p

if you look at wordtracker's website they'll have the top searches overall listed -- they're equally stupid. things like "yahoo" or "aol"

Yeah! I've always been amazed at finding yahoo in there. I thought there might be some sort of weird technical reason it might be in there. But obviously yahoo offer a whole empire of services, so that may go some way to explaining it.

I wonder with a bit of SEO and loads of sites linking to you if you could beat yahoo on googles listings...

Some parts of Yahoo have PR's of 9, so I doubt it.

Why do people search for google.com and ebay.com and hotmail.com??? They could just type it in... unless the go the go and the search button confused like I did for the first month I had internet in 1996.

its mostly confused and or less computer-literature people who do not understand what a URL is.

Many people still use search engines to type the url in, not the address bar. They're just used to do that or they don't want to change this 'habit' or maybe don't need to... :)

When I'm on an old slow machine at school and I go on the net I click the address bar, but when I type it goes into the Yahoo search box on www.yahoo.com (the homepage). I can't be bothered typing the address again, so I just search...

You can get to a site by entering it in the google toolbar, which I find surprising considering you can't on google.com.

A friend of mine allways uses the google searchbox instead of the url field of the browser. He just types the url and then hits "I feel lucky".

I'm glad Google's actually still working on itself. They could just sit back and let the cash roll in, but they don't. I like the Google calculator too, it's a great idea.

With microsoft on their tails, they can't really just sit back and let the cash roll in. The blanket would be pulled from their feet

They're still sitting on something like 85% market share. I wouldn't really say Microsoft is on their tails- closing in, but not tight yet.

I would say in business terms they are on their tails. I'm not suggesting there will be take overs or anything like that but the threat comes from the development of Microsoft's own engine. They have the power to raise the profile of something like that extremely fast.

It's enough to keep google developing at a good rate, which it is.

Remember, Netscape had the same kind of marketshare for browsers back before MS released IE. Within a year they were eclipsed...

All MS need do is have a search engine, create links with major ISPs and portals, and wham - they're a search engine giant.

They already do that Mark.

MSN has been the default search engine in IE for years. If you type in a wrong address in IE a page comes up with an MSN search box. MSN itself had an icon on the Win98 desktop that was impossible to delete.

Google is still #1.

I love google, but MSN gets me 10 times as many visitors as google...

I think google should buy people like yahoo so it has a larger market share...

Google is already providing the search results for Yahoo.

I still think that the majority of users will search at whichever SE gives them the fastest, best, and easiest. Google is clearly the dominant force in that regard. Unless MSN really gets its butt in gear and starts showing results relevanter than Google, I think Google will stay on top.

And yes, 'relevanter' should be a real word.

I like the way google is set up...

I used to be in love with yahoo because of the better features... but I moved to the better SE results....

And that is why Google is where it's at now. Features are cool, but if you can't give your visitor what they want it's all for naught.

If you type in "How does google work?" and click I'm Feeling Lucky (just cause its faster) then it comes up with some wierd stuff. Read it... O.o;; First spiders... and now this!!
