I was just reading a thread at SG a week or so ago where some person claimed they could move any site to the top and the thread grew quite big with ideas (for search terms), speculations, and general SEO banter. I lost the thread but always wondered what happened. Last I read the person hadn't checked back in, but he was given a liberal amount of time to prove his claim.

I'd like to see what search term they choose. If my host wasn't already sick of me adding, removing, swapping accounts & domains all the time I'd probably give it a go for the hell of it.

This sounds fun, but millionaire who enjoys thinks like this will just buy PR and win.

Do you have to go for specific keywords? If not, then you could just go for an easy one.

There will be rules Mike otherwise I would go with "percept" :p

It says here (http://www.darkblue.com/seochallenge/), and on the official contest thread, that the search term(s) will be announced when the contest starts.

And after reading the official post for the contest it looks like the thread I was talking about above may have played a part in this contest, heh. Not directly, but it states "I've seen alot of discussion about...".

Ah-ha....found the thread (http://www.searchguild.com/tpage8122-0.html). It even sparked another thread directed at the starter of the first.

edit: Grr. Another post sneaking in on me today.

the term you need to optimize for is "TBA" ( that's not saying much :) ) if anyone wants to enter make sure you follow the rules.

Really quite silly if you ask me. You do things like this publicly and Google gets upset. I bet no one ends up ranking well on the term, unless it is obscure like "albino eskimos"

Hi,

Just saw the post and thought I'd drop in and and give a bit more information.

The comp is designed as a bit of fun, and a way for SEOs to show off their talents. Rank number one - anyway you can - and you can score yourself a prize.

We've been very careful to select a term that is not commercial in nature and currently has no results so we do not interfere with the regular Google search results. The term will be announced on 7th May at 9am GMT.

Good luck.

Looks like Chris was right, it is going to be "albino eskimos" :D

For those interested, we have started a blog at http://www.seochallenge.com to keep everyone informed of any news and have a running commentary of the Google results.

And as a head's up... there's not long now until the term is announced. Get to SearchGuild at 9am GMT when it will be released!

I updated the title of this thread. Just as a little joke -- we'll see how this thread ends up ranking for "nigritude ultramarine"

lol... Glad you did that. :) I was thinking of starting a new thread with that title. Wasn't sure if you would like that though.

Only problem is we really needed the keywords, nigritude ultramarine, to be on page 1 of the thread. We've kinda missed that opportunity now.

EDIT - take that back. It jumps to the last page anyway so we're ok for nigritude ultramarine :)

Ever sinse the beginning of website publishing people have fought over the keyworf nigritude ultramarine for no apparent reason. Now nigritude ultramarine is become the best keyword sinse chromate ruled the earth! Nigritude ultramarine is not a new thing, Chris once added a book of that name by Emily Bronte to his literature site.

I'd like to see if the site that's currently #1 can be knocked off. I checked for that domain shortly after the contest started, and it said available, but I was sure that it just hadn't been processed yet.

Percept
05-09-2004, 08:05 AM
edit: there are complete groups supporting one site so there's little to no chance to rank high on this contest unless you've got a PR 7 or something.

Chris
05-09-2004, 08:55 AM
That what I do not get.

No offense to any contest participants, but if I'm going to throw PR at something, I'll throw it at something that will...

1. For sure make me money.

2. Make me more money than whatever an ipod and TV are worth.

Obviously you'll need more than on-page factors to win, and if you use off-page factors within your control (ie the weight of your other sites) you'll be, IMO, throwing away resources better spent elsewhere.

incka
05-09-2004, 08:58 AM
I agree with Chris hear, with PR7 you could make so much on sites about dating/debt/etc which will make far more than an ipod...

Percept

I totally agree Chris but since my site is a personal non-commercial one I'm not really wasting anything. Can't speak for the rest of the participants though.

Not anymore ( well the white hats anyway ), there have been some complaints by wikki owners. The SEO claim a wikki sandbox shouldn't be open for search engines anyway. I have posted 1 link on a wikki sandbox but didn't continue because I considdered it spamming.

I had almost fallen out of the top 200. The site that held #1 forever got knocked off by merkey.net after this last update. But it seems (now) they just got knocked off.
