I just bought a new domain yesterday, and wake up today to a voice mail on my cell phone from aplus.net trying to solicit business from me. I haven't had a chance to move the domain to my host yet, so it's still sitting at Dotster. He said to call him back, but I just deleted his message because I can guarantee he doesn't want me to call him back.

I can't stand things like that. If I want hosting, I'll find you, you don't find me. And that just ruled out me ever doing any kind of business with that particular company.

Bah. I wake up grumpy as it is.

Is it the guy who posts here under aplus?

I don't know. I don't even remember the guys name, I had just woke up and listened to the message. So was still half asleep.

That's pathetic. I have also heard stories that aplus has been putting code on sites they are hosting that can only be viewed by spiders/bots. Something like "Web hosting provided by Aplus".

Aplus.net Takes Down Cloaked Links

April 26, 2004 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting provider Aplus.net admitted last Friday that it "cloaked" customer's Web sites with hidden code in order to boost its search engine rankings, but said that it had removed the links as soon as it became aware of them.

These guys have been calling people from WHOIS info for months... they're a really low class business. Been talking to one of their chat reps for a while, nice guy, doesn't really like them either. Gets paid commission bonuses which is why someone's always popping a chat in your face over there. As far as aplus.net sees it, there's nothing wrong with calling every new domain registrant as long as they screen against the federal DNC list (ignoring the state lists, verisign's WHOIS TOS, among other things). Oh well.

A web design company called one of my clients the other day, trying to offer to re-design his site. I wasn't pleased.

But, that's the price of capitalism.

Dan, glad to see you over here. Just purchased some of your services while I was bored (untargetted, don't expect any results). Just wanted to check your service out.

SPF, WHT, HTTPTalk and NP aren't filling my needs for webmaster forums anymore. Not enough fresh threads. Of course, Chris's forums are great :)

I wonder if you fill all customer orders that quickly :)

Dan Grossman

Off Topic
Nope, I piss a lot of people off making them wait up to a day to fill an order. Maybe if it wasn't such a chore I'd fill orders more than twice a day.

About 25% have to be e-mailed and put on hold until they can remove popups or music from the page, and a couple a day have to be manually refunded for ordering traffic to an adult site.

Then there's the occasional scammer paying with someone else's money to send visitors to a site that installs a password stealing trojan (3 of 'em so far, that almost got me infected in the process). $324 in reversed payments by PayPal this week from one of those and a stolen account.

Plus when I fill orders I usually go through the last week's orders URLs again to check that they haven't changed their site content... some people like to submit a valid site then change it to their favorite porno affiliate program once the traffic starts coming, and raise their daily cap as high as they can.

It would do me good to employ someone for customer service with a better attitude than myself, I'm sure.

This is a rather comfortable feeling forum. It deserves more members than this.

Yeah, it's one of the best I've seen (probably due to the small size).

Watch out for that incka character, he's an ***.

You'll never find me playing on anything without an AMD processor inside, and the game will be free. UT2004 demo currently.

I'm about to sell my iMac and get an Alienware. I've always wanted one.

Dan Grossman
05-01-2004, 01:32 AM
Don't waste your money on that... you can build (meaning push things into slots and place a dozen or less screws) the same thing for less than half the cost, with the same parts.

Shawn

I know. But I want it pretty.

lol, alienware is so freakin expensive, and if you are going to make website's a normal p3-p4 is good. If you get alienware you may get distracted and start playing games.

I don't like computer games.

So despite not playing computer games, you want an overpriced gaming system just for the playskool plastic case? :)

www.colorcases.com

Poor costumer service, slow shipping, but nice cases.

Dan Grossman

Xoxide.com is known for its cases (http://www.xoxide.com/). They're a PA company and sponsor Drexel's LAN parties with free cases, but I've been buying from them for a few years.

When a cold cathode fan they sent me was defective, rather than make me send it back for an RMA, they simply mailed me a new one no questions asked.

Sunday nights they have an "X-Hour" sale where you can get some great deals. I sleeved all the cables in my computer at $0.15/foot from one of their sales, and got a cheap fan controller to quiet things down.

How easy are these cases to fit onto an already built computer?

Would they work on a Dell Dimension 8300?

Dan Grossman

If your motherboard is standard ATX size then you can move it into any standard size case. Look up your motherboard model online to see if it is, Dell doesn't provide the exact model number online.

I'm not quite sure why a thread about a web host's bad practices turned into a completely offtopic thread about gaming and computers.

Just bought: http://www.xoxide.com/clearacatxca.html

Almost $200 after adding the lights, power supply, fans, etc, but I think it'll be well worth it. Thanks Dan.

Why buy a case, just for looks?

Because I wanted to buy a case -- just for looks.

My box is in the cupboard, its completely silent - not just quiet, I cant hear it at two in the morning with no other noise.

Mike, be careful if u change your Dell case - Dell dont use a standard ATX PSU, so dont use the PSU that might come with any case you get.
