It's simply the search results. This has been available for a long *** time (mainly used by handheld users).

An actual free tool for checking rankings is digitalpoint's keyword tracker.

I like it, it's a lot quicker than me browsing through all of the pages and also there isn't any descriptions which makes it easier.

Still, I wasn't happy with the results I found ;)

Yes, I know about DigitalPoint's tools and have used them for quite a while. The Google tool I posted makes it simple (and quick) to compare where you are in the top 100 search results versus your competitors. For example, it may be useful after the next major Google update to see who the "movers and shakers" are. :)
