Google is launching a free e-mail service called Gmail.

Not that big a deal, but get this-

There are no pop-ups or banner ads in Gmail. Gmail does include relevant text ads that are similar to the ads appearing on the right side of Google search results pages. The matching of ads to content is a completely automated process performed by computers using the same technology that powers the Google AdSense program. This technology already places targeted ads on thousands of sites across the web by quickly analyzing the content of pages and determining which ads are most relevant to them. No humans read your email to target the ads, and no email content or other personally identifiable information is ever provided to advertisers.

Contextual e-mail ads? Is that really what the world needs?

And the bottom line is that they're reading your mail.

Unless this is an April Fool's joke....

It's been very well written if it is an April fools...

It is strange that April Fools is on the same day as the start of the financial year.

Keep it all in context.
Each message is grouped with all its replies and displayed as a conversation. That plus a gig of email storage.

If they can pull off the message grouping in an easy-to-use interface they'll acquire a substantial amount of users. If they can duplicate Yahoo's ability to send/recieve multiple addresses from one account, they may rocket to the #1 free email service.

How are they making money? Adsense at the side or targetted emails?
