What is SEO? (Search Engine Optimization)

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" or un-paid ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results as opposed to search engine marketing (SEM) which deals with paid inclusion. ...

For techniques to improve the search engine optimization of your site you should read the webmaster guidelines for each search engine and directory.

In the pdf SEO-guide I downloaded from this website, there are examples for each category; but I can't find a complete list and I am sure wikipedia is making confusion between them, as it often does.

AOL.com is a search portal.
Google, Yahoo, MSN (Live.com) and Ask.com are all search engines.
SearchFeed.com is a PPC engine.
DMOZ.org is a directory.
Dogpile.com is a meta search engine.

Those are the examples, where could I find the complete list with the correct division by the different defined categories (search engines- PPC search engines - directories - meta search engines)?

It would be a technically reliable one, not wikipedia one, if possible.

Thank you.
Claudio
